"How the balkans came to be: A look from the inside"

The lecture turns around the western, quasi-orientalist perspective on the Balkans by offering glimpses into the intellectual history of the Balkan idea as it evolved within the region itself. It attends to the Balkans as ‘self-designation’ and a project of regional identity formation and undertakes to restore the agency of the regional scholarly and political elites for the understanding of ‘the Balkans’ and the images it conveys. It thus seeks to contribute to the ongoing debates related to the creation of space and historical regions, which feed into rethinking the premises of the ‘new area studies’, and invites reflection on the way we, at the present time, conceptualize and evaluate regionalism as politics and transnationalism as a scholarly project.

Diana Mishkova ist Professorin für Geschichte und Direktorin des Centre for Advanced Study in Sofia. Sie ist korrespondierendes Mitglied der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Doktor honoris causa der Universität Södertörn, Stockholm. Ihre Forschungsinteressen gelten der Südosteuropäischen Geschichte, der Geistesgeschichte, den Area Studies und der Historiographie. Mit ihren neuesten Büchern Beyond Balkanism. The Scholarly Politics of Region Making (London/New York 2018) und European Regions and Boundaries. A Conceptual History, hg. mit Balázs Trencsényi (London 2017), leistet sie einen wichtigen Beitrag zu den laufenden Debatten über die Herstellung von Raum und historischen Regionen. Ihre Forschungen laden dazu ein, die Prämissen der »New Area Studies« neu zu überdenken.
