„How the bal­kans came to be: A look from the inside“

The lec­tu­re turns around the wes­tern, quasi-​orientalist per­spec­ti­ve on the Bal­kans by offe­ring glim­p­ses into the intellec­tu­al histo­ry of the Bal­kan idea as it evol­ved within the regi­on its­elf. It attends to the Bal­kans as ‘self-​designation’ and a pro­ject of regio­nal iden­ti­ty for­ma­ti­on and under­ta­kes to res­to­re the agen­cy of the regio­nal scho­lar­ly and poli­ti­cal eli­tes for the under­stan­ding of ‘the Bal­kans’ and the images it con­veys. It thus seeks to con­tri­bu­te to the ongo­ing deba­tes rela­ted to the crea­ti­on of space and his­to­ri­cal regi­ons, which feed into rethin­king the pre­mi­ses of the ‘new area stu­dies’, and invi­tes reflec­tion on the way we, at the pre­sent time, con­cep­tua­li­ze and eva­lua­te regio­na­lism as poli­tics and trans­na­tio­na­lism as a scho­lar­ly project.

Dia­na Mish­ko­va ist Pro­fes­so­rin für Geschich­te und Direk­to­rin des Cent­re for Advan­ced Stu­dy in Sofia. Sie ist kor­re­spon­die­ren­des Mit­glied der Öster­rei­chi­schen Aka­de­mie der Wis­sen­schaf­ten und Dok­tor hono­ris cau­sa der Uni­ver­si­tät Söder­törn, Stock­holm. Ihre For­schungs­in­ter­es­sen gel­ten der Süd­ost­eu­ro­päi­schen Geschich­te, der Geis­tes­ge­schich­te, den Area Stu­dies und der His­to­rio­gra­phie. Mit ihren neu­es­ten Büchern Bey­ond Bal­ka­nism. The Scho­lar­ly Poli­tics of Regi­on Making (London/​New York 2018) und Euro­pean Regi­ons and Boun­da­ries. A Con­cep­tu­al Histo­ry, hg. mit Balázs Trenc­sé­nyi (Lon­don 2017), leis­tet sie einen wich­ti­gen Bei­trag zu den lau­fen­den Debat­ten über die Her­stel­lung von Raum und his­to­ri­schen Regio­nen. Ihre For­schun­gen laden dazu ein, die Prä­mis­sen der »New Area Stu­dies« neu zu überdenken.
